It was anything but a glamorous start to a home-building career.

Cleaning up garbage. Sweeping away wood ends. Carting away wheelbarrows full of the inevitable detritus that clutters a half-built lot.

While everyone around him was creating something of enduring and appreciating value, Doug Wastell was taking out the trash. But that same work is where he learned the importance of a necessary job well done.
